The Vezere Valley in the Dordogne region of France possesses an exceptional concentration of archaeological and prehistoric sites of world interest. In 1979, fifteen of these prehistoric habitats and decorated caves were designated by UNESCO as World Heritage sites. The natural and landscaped environments of the valley also present remarkable physical, ecological and human characteristics. The particular nature of the “Vezere Valley” territory led the French State, Aquitaine Region and Dordogne Department to initiate a global and collaborative procedure to valorize its cultural, touristic and patrimonial resources. This project is part of the Plan Etat Region contracts successively implemented since 1994, including the “Vezere Valley” convention signed by the three parties in 2008 in the context of the State-Aquitaine Region project, 2007-2013.
Legal structure This collaborative project to valorize the Vezere Valley is organized within the framework of the “Pôle International de la Préhistoire” (PIP), a Public Cultural Interest Group (Groupement d’intérêt Public Culturel) constituted in 2002 between the General Council of the Dordogne, The Regional Council of the Aquitaine and the French State under the principal responsibility of the Ministries of Culture, National Education and Tourism. On January 1, 2010 a new legal structure was created: an Etablissement Public de Coopération Culturel (EPCC) in order to sustain this collaborative project and insure the management of its equipment and the new activities of the Pôle.
