The Pôle International de la Préhistoire plays the leading role in a major project to transform this territory into the largest prehistoric site in Europe and one of the foremost destinations in the world for Prehistory.
Since its creation, the objective of the Pôle has been to valorize the exceptional patrimony of the Vezere Valley and to present it in a coherent manner through the creation of a touristic and cultural development program in the domain of prehistory. This project associates educational activities, cultural events and numerous documentary resources aimed at providing the general public with a better knowledge of both the territory and prehistory.
The Pôle proposes concerted activities and resources through collaborations with a vast network of partners including diverse structures in the domains of archaeology and prehistory (National Museum of Prehistory, Centre National de la Préhistoire, INRAP, the Regional and Departmental Archaeology Services, the PACEA laboratory/Université Bordeaux 1, etc.) and the ensemble of education, tourist and public library institutions: • On-line information and digital documentary resources (Internet site) in the field of prehistory for teachers, students, scientists, as well as the general public : digital library, virtual exhibits, virtual visits to sites in the Vezere Valley, thematic portfolios, archaeological research news, editorial reviews, etc. • Educational activities for school groups: workshops, site visits, interventions by archaeologists, discussions and debates, educational programs, etc. • Actions for cultural tourism development in the domain of prehistory: the “Trails of Prehistory” hiking trails, a program to aid and valorize prehistoric sites, training sessions for tourism personnel. • Events and manifestations: conferences, exhibits and colloquia, particularly in the context of the “Préhistoire en fêtes” operation.
The global project, at the scale of the Vezere Valley, also includes the realization of structures that are currently in the process of conception or realization in Les Eyzies, Campagne and Montignac. The vocation of these centers is to facilitate and improve public access to knowledge in the domains of archaeology and prehistory.
